Oh, Liz. I'm 7 months into getting a divorce. Your story resonates with me strongly. I put a shelf on the wall and filled it with trinkets from my travels, memories of a life that I am now reclaiming. Statues and candles now adorn my apartment after being liberated from their prison cells deep in the closets. Hope has returned to my life as I reclaim my living space and mark it as my own.
Hi Peter! I love to hear it, this rings so true. The first thing I did too was fill my shelves with old trinkets that had been stashed away and banished from view. So happy to hear hope is returning!
Oh gosh, I loved this. “It felt fitting, like nature reclaiming a ruined city.” I too once had a sofa like that, one that had to be left behind to make room for the life I needed to leave. You were and are brave to wield a chainsaw against the things you loved, that nevertheless needed to go. May we all be so brave.
A few thoughts: 1) Your writing is superb, as always; 2) I remember the post-divorce museum days; 3) it takes some real cojones to chainsaw a perfectly good couch inside your living room.

“The things you loved that nevertheless needed to go.” Nailed it. You always have the best comments :)
Chainsaw! How badass!
Hahah to be clear, I hired men with saws. But it was satisfying even secondhand.
Ohhh I LOVE your space! The gem tones you've selected are gorgeous! That couch is sublime.
Thank you!
Your writing is on fire in this post! By the time you got to the chainsaw, I was reading-laughing through tears. Love the new rooms!! :-)
Hahaha! I am really enjoying how much people are enjoying the chainsaw! :)

Thank you! I was picking splinters out of the white carpets for months. 🤦♀️ I eventually gave up and just gave them away too hahaha.
Letting it all go! I love it!
Love being part of your vibrant, colorful, art-filled life!
❤️❤️ the couch is ready for you!
